Medical Services
Experienced & Dedicated Medical Team
Camp Wawona’s volunteer summer medical team is onsite and available around the clock to care for campers and respond to medical needs.
Safe & Healthy Environment
At Camp Wawona, the health and safety of our campers is a top priority. Since 1929, we’ve created a clean, well-managed environment where children can grow, play, and thrive. Before the start of summer, almost all Camp Wawona staff complete certified CPR and First Aid training. Each week, our medical team consists of a provider (MD, NP, or PA) and at least two RNs. Our housekeeping staff work to ensure a clean environment, and our food service staff prepare three delicious, healthy, and kid-friendly meals each day!
Equipment and Supplies
All camp activities are equipped with first aid kits, which are inspected and restocked weekly by the medical team.
While we hope for no injuries at camp, our medical center is stocked to provide basic medical care and includes supplies such as:
- AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Bandaging materials
- Splinting and casting materials
- Suturing equipment
- Emergency medications
- IV fluids and administration tools
Bringing Medications to Camp
Camp Wawona's medical team will administer all medications. All camper medications—prescription and over-the-counter—must be brought in their original containers with labels.
With the exception of inhalers and EpiPens (which campers may carry with written approval), all medications are stored in a locked area and administered by Camp Wawona’s medical team in accordance with physician instructions or signed parent/guardian directions.
• Please remove medications from luggage and present them directly to the medical staff at registration.
• Vitamins, supplements, and natural remedies will only be administered at camp if they are prescribed by a doctor, and in the original prescription container. If they aren't prescribed, please leave them at home!
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my camper gets sick or injured at camp?
Getting sick or injured at camp is never fun, but if it happens, our medical team is determined to
do their best to take care of your child and get them back to camp activities as soon as possible!
Every day at camp, we have one medical provider (MD, NP, or PA) and two registered nurses
that are available 24 hours a day for our campers and staff.
Most medical incidents at camp are minor scrapes and bumps. If your child has a minor issue
(like a mild injury or low-grade fever) our medical team will treat them onsite, and you won’t be
contacted unless further care is needed.
However, we will contact you if your camper:
• Has a fever of 101°F or higher
• Needs prescription medications
• Has an injury requiring stitches, staples, splints, etc.
• Has a suspected fracture, severe sprain, head/neck/spine injury, or dental injury
• Experiences a loss of consciousness
• Stays in the medical building longer than 6 hours for any reason.
• Requires care or evaluation outside the Camp Wawona medical facility
If you have any questions before camp begins, you’re welcome to email us
at summercampoffice@campwawona.org, or talk with our medical team when you arrive at
camp.
My child has special needs. Can I send them to Camp Wawona?
We value the uniqueness of each child, and our staff are trained care for children with many
different needs. Our volunteer medical team, consisting of one licensed provider (MD, NP, or PA)
and two registered nurses, is ready and able to give medications throughout the day, and care for
campers who require daily medication. Please see our “Bringing Medications to Camp” section above
for more information.
Because we aim to provide excellent care for all our campers, there are some needs that we are
not equipped to care for, due to the nature of our program, and the steep terrain of our property.
Currently, we are unable to accommodate:
- Campers with total vision or hearing loss
- Campers who use a wheelchair
- Campers with current broken bones
Additionally, for the safety of all, we are unable to accommodate conditions that are not
currently well-managed or that require ongoing intensive support. Examples may include:
- Uncontrolled seizure disorders
- Uncontrolled asthma
- Uncontrolled bleeding disorders
- Uncontrolled psychiatric conditions
- Uncontrolled behavioral challenges
Campers with these diagnoses may still be eligible to attend if their condition is well-managed.
If you have any questions, we invite you to reach out. We’re happy to have a conversation to
learn more about your camper’s needs and help you decide whether a week at Camp Wawona
is the right fit. Please email us at summercampoffice@campwawona.org
Does Camp Wawona accommodate food allergies?
Yes! Our kitchen staff and counselors are trained to manage food allergies and ensure your
camper’s safety during mealtimes. If your camper has severe or complex food allergies, please
contact us ahead of time so we can be sure we can safety accommodate their dietary needs.
Still have questions?
We’d love to help. Email us anytime at summercampoffice@campwawona.org.
Before We Let You Go...
It is vital that you fill out the camper health forms completely to the best of your knowledge during the registration process. The information you provide is all we have in case of an emergency!
Close-toed shoes are essential to participate in most camp activities.
Sunscreen and bug spray will ensure your camper has a happy week at camp.
Reusable water bottles make it easy to stay hydrated throughout the day. Summertime is dry and hot, and dehydration happens more often at our higher elevations.
(Sunscreen, bug spray, and water bottles are available for sale in our camp store)
